ARG

On the one hand I love the internet. A LOT. A survey that I posted for use in my thesis and other projects garners 84 replies in 10 DAYS, despite being waaaay too long. On the other hand it kills me very very dead. If I want to print this survey and it's responses out it will take 462 pages. If I adjust it so that it prints out in 40% size, which is still sort of readable without a magnifying glass it still needs 56 pages. Tomorrow I have to go buy paper because trying to read the damn thing on screen is giving me fits.

Also I didn't go for a walk today because the wind last night was very loud and kept me awake rattling my window. So I slept in instead. So today's picture is:

Next time I'll bring both batteries

Today I went for a long walk. Not so much in distance (I have no idea how far I actually went) but in time, it took me an hour and a half to go out but only half an hour to get back, mainly because the battery on my camera was dead so I couldn't take many pictures coming back. The Boulder Creek Trail runs nearish to my place. I mainly walk it to the grocery store and back because it means I only have to wait for one light and it's nicer to walk by the creek than by the road. This is what I was on/above when I took the last two pictures of Boulder Creek.

When I set out on my walk I was pretty sure you were going to get a picture of Boulder Creek. Then I saw the Prairie Dogs and I was pretty sure you were going to get a picture of them. Until I ran into the train tracks. Now I've got no clue what the picture for today will be. My camera has just finished uploading all 172 pictures and one video to my computer so after I go through them we'll see which one I like best.

Also before I forget. Does Colorado have any poisonous snakes? A small-brown-well-camouflaged type and I had a moment of mutual startlement early on in the walk. It looked sort of corn snakeish and was only about a foot long and as thick as my pinky but if there are poisonous snakes I'd like to know.

Tomorrow I plan to take both batteries and head out earlier, possibly with a snack. I haven't decided yet if I am just going to go further along Boulder Creek Trail, or if I'm going to wander off on one of the intersecting trails.

.In class this week, and next, we're reading Murakami Haruki's Kafka on the Shore which I am, like all his works, in love with. One of the nice things about reading Murakami is that you know that it's a good translation. Because Murakami has a dedicated translator in Philip Gabriel and because Murakami is fluent in English (he does translations of Raymond Carver, among others into Japanese) so you know he wouldn't have chosen to work with a translator who he felt altered his work. It's really nice to be able to have that sort of trust in a translated work.

It's like waves really

So round about a year ago, I wrote a post which was basically me going o.O I can hear the football fans from HERE? As in so many other ways this apartment outdoes that one. As I was locking the door today on my way to go take one of the pictures I didn't take yesterday, I heard "touchdooown Colorado." I can hear the announcer from my house. heh.

Saving Pictures

The problem with this project is I save pictures. So I'll see something and think "ooh that's really neat I should take a picture of it. But I've already taken my picture for the day so I'll save it for later." Which is not quite what the project was intended to do. I mean it's supposed to train you to see pictures but you're not supposed to stop yourself from taking them. This observation is brought to you by the pictures I did not take yesterday and today. Of course the picture I didn't take today I saw as we went past it in the car, so I'm forgiven for that. The other one, I guess I'm just saving.

Today's picture is not what it would have been

But I had to race home to try to beat the heating repair guy. He cleaned a disgusting amount of dirt off the fan of my heater, which suddenly runs more quietly. The sheer amount of dirt on the fan was apparently unbalancing it. While he was cleaning out the dirt he also pulled out the following item.

Project365 Day Two: Civic Duty

I got my ballot in the mail today. Guess what I took a picture of, go on guess.Actually you get two pictures today because I wanted to post the first one. Especially after all the articles about how in previous elections no matter how good a game white voters talked they just couldn't bring themselves to vote for African American. Then you got picture two because I read the ballot and thought huh, that's a sneaky way to ban abortion.

From Project365
10.06.08 Day 2 1 of 2 Boulder County Ballot Out of curiosity why were the Republican candidates always listed first?

From Project 365 extras

10.06.08 Day 2 2 of 2 Boulder County Ballot A sneaky way to ban abortion.

Also upon reading the ballots a useful thing to require would be easily comprehensible language. When I was putting everything together for the HRC review of my survey they had all sorts of rules about how the consent form had to be written in language that was easily understood by the target audience. Don't you think ballots should be too? Half the things I read them and went ? ??? and voted with the BCD recommendations.

EDIT: I got a comment on this entry (which I deleted because it was rude and the commenter hadn't even the guts to say who they were) asking why I would vote for a "marxist socialist muslim n****r" (asterisks mine) and ignoring all of the errors in categorizing Obama I have to wonder which of those epithets is the worst for the commenter?

See the only bad one for me is the last and that is because I find the term itself to be offensive no matter who says it. I have no problems with Muslims either in general or in specific and the other two are ideologies that are wonderful in theory but don't work in practice. Hopefully the hatemonger will not return.

Project365

I've decided to do Project365, since I don't use my camera nearly enough. Project365 is very simple you take at least one photo a day every day for a year. The first time I decided I'd do this, a couple of weeks ago, I took one photo and forgot. Hopefully I'll be better this time.So here is photo number one taken this morning on my way to the grocery store. Oh, I don't want to stop now and take out my camera, I thought I'll do it when I'm on my way back instead. Luckily I realized I wouldn't and took the picture then.
